On Friday July 27, 2018 an off-duty Bensalem Township Police Officer spotted two subjects walking through the parking lot of the Acme in Woodhaven Mall. The two men were caught pulling on multiple car doors in attempt to gain entry. The off-duty officer recognized them as the subjects of a vehicle theft and credit card fraud case from earlier that morning.
Responding officers were able to take one of the subjects, Patrick Ivers, 29, into custody at the scene but his accomplice, John Palumbo, 31 led quite the chase.
Palumbo took off an foot and eventually made his way into a silver 2013 Cadillac. He rammed into a Bensalem Township Police vehicle before exiting the mall southbound on Bristol Pike. He then abandoned the vehicle at Gatehouse Apartments on State Road to run to Salem Harbour Apartments on foot.
A K-9 track led police through the apartment complex, past the pool and along the Delaware River. As officers approached, Palumbo was spotted coming out of a thick wooded area, and entered the river in attempt to escape. After treading water for a few minutes, he finally exited the water and was taken into custody.
Palumbo faces aggravated assault, fleeing and eluding police, resisting arrest, hit and run, reckless driving and more. Both men were arraigned, but Palumbo is held on 10 percent of $500,000 bail. Ivers who was charged with theft from motor vehicle, receiving stolen property, access device fraud, false ID to law enforcement and conspiracy is being held on 10 percent of $100,000 bail.
