Update: Mother and resident Tika Justice, 38, confirmed deceased in the collapse, survived by her two daughters, ages 16 and 20. The youngest daughter was found with the mother’s body covering her, likely saving her life.

Three people were trapped when a house collapsed at about 7 a.m. Monday morning in Mercer County.

First responders have rescued the people and the cause of the collapse of the three-story home on the 1800 block of South Broad Street in Hamilton Township is unknown.

The active search part of the response is over, but work is ongoing.

Neighbors like Della Porter reported smelling gas in the area.

A PSE&G official said that the incident doesn’t appear to be gas-related, and the energy company shut off gas in the area as part of its standard procedure.

Porter was in her home cooking breakfast when she heard sirens, but she did not hear the building collapse. She doesn’t know the people’s names, but she says hello to them when they walk by when she sits on her porch.

“I just really really hope that they all come out alive,” Porter said.

This is a developing story.
